Founded in 2016 by Registered Kinesiologist Daniel Bordenave, BISEP is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with mobility impairments through innovative solutions.

Our flagship product, the ARMM (Ambulation, Retraining, and Mobility Mechanism), was developed to address the challenges faced by patients in long-term care. The ARMM connects wheelchairs to walkers, enabling safer, more independent ambulation training.

BISEP has successfully brought this innovative device to market, having won numerous innovation competitions such as the AGE-WELL Innovation Challenge, Synapse Life Science Competition and with support from key research partners: Ontario Centres of Innovation, SONAMI, Brock University, The University Of Ottawa, and Niagara College Walker Advanced Manufacturing Centre.

Meet the Bisep Team

Daniel Bordenave

Founder/Inventor

Daniel holds a Bachelor of Kinesiology (Honours) and a Master of Science in Applied Health Science, both from Brock University. A Registered Kinesiologist, he has extensive experience working in long-term care and rehabilitation. His deep industry knowledge and passion for innovation led to the creation of BISEP and its flagship product, the ARMM. Daniel also serves as CEO of the Niagara Falls Innovation Hub, offering support to startup businesses. Under his leadership, BISEP has garnered recognition and accolades from both the healthcare and innovation communities.

Virginia Atkin

Chief Financial Officer

Virginia has over 40 years experience in financial and operations management, having served as CFO and HR manager to pension advisory and benchmarking firms KPA Advisory Services, CEM Benchmarking, as well as similar roles for multiple charitable organizations. As BISEP’s CFO, Virginia ensures the company’s financial health and oversees its corporate governance, drawing on her expertise in nonprofit and business sectors.

David D'Angelo

Lead Operations Advisor

David is a seasoned entrepreneur and the founder of Trivium Industries, which pioneered biodegradable plastic bottles for the beauty and cosmetics industry. Following the successful sale of Trivium to a U.S. competitor, as BISEP’s COO, David oversees the ARMM’s manufacturing and delivery processes.

Arv Ramsingh

Director of Sales

Arv brings over 35 years of experience in IT, sales, and B2B corporate sales to BISEP. His work has spanned industries from hospitality to global IT, and his client roster includes leading brands like Costco Wholesale and Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream. His business development and sales expertise helps BISEP expand its market reach and build lasting client relationships.

Meet Bisep's Advisory Board

Keith Ambachtsheer

Executive-in-Residence at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, Senior Fellow, National Institute on Aging, Director Emeritus of the International Centre for Pension Management, and former Board Chair of the Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation. With over 40 years of experience advising global pension organizations with KPA Advisory Services, Keith is a recognized leader in financial management and governance. As Lead Investor, Keith brings his wealth of experience to BISEP, guiding its financial strategy and growth.

Dr. Bob Bell

Dr. Bell is the former Deputy Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for the Province of Ontario. Prior to that, he was CEO of the University Health Network and former medical director of the Princess Margaret Cancer Hospital. On the academic side, he is Professor Emeritus, Department of Surgery, University of Toronto. An orthopedic surgeon with decades of healthcare leadership experience, Dr. Bell is a valued advisor to Bisep Innovations, providing strategic guidance and key introductions within the healthcare industry.

Dr. David Ditor

Dr. Ditor is a Professor at Brock University specializing in spinal cord injury research. He led the clinical research for BISEP and has been a long-term supporter of the ARMM device. Dr. Ditor also owns a medical device company and continues to contribute to BISEP’s research and innovation.

Jodi Steele

Jodi is a registered physiotherapist and professor at Niagara College, teaching in health and fitness programs. She’s also the founder of Cancer Rehab Inc., Canada’s first not-for-profit cancer rehab center, and a former academic representative on Niagara College’s Board of Governors

Deborah Livneh

Deborah is Entrepreneur in Residence at the WeTech Business Incubator in Windsor and chairs the WeTech-Alliance Angel Investment Group. Having successfully founded and exited her own medical-tech company, Deborah offers invaluable insights and guidance to BISEP as it continues to scale and innovate in the medical technology sector.

Dr. Dan Patterson

Dr. Patterson served as President of Niagara College from 1995 to 2020, significantly expanding the institution’s programs and facilities. He has also served as Board Chair at the Ontario Centre of Innovation. His experience in academia and governance makes him a valuable member of BISEP’s advisory board, contributing insights into education, research, and business development.

Innovation

BISEP is continually innovating to create new products to enhance the lives of those with mobility impairments. Here is the trajectory of the development of the ARMM:

2018

Daniel Bordenave invented the ARMM device while working as a registered Kinesiologist in a long-term care home and realizing this problem first hand.

2019

The first home built prototype of the ARMM was developed, focusing on stabilizing patients by connecting their wheelchair to a walker for safer mobility training.

2020

The device was enhanced making it lighter and more durable, ensuring its practical use in clinical environments.

2021

BISEP conducted clinical trials with Brock University at Niagara Region Long Term Care Homes, validating the ARMM’s effectiveness in improving patient mobility and reducing falls.

2022

Focus group testing with over 50 physiotherapists at Juravinski Hospital provided valuable feedback, leading to refinements that improved the device’s functionality. Following some of the Feedback the second version of the device was created.

2023

In collaboration with the University of Ottawa, the ARMM device was successfully integrated into Perley Health’s physiotherapy workflows, showing positive impacts on patient safety and rehabilitation. Following the feedback of this study, the final market ready enhancements were created to the device making it safer and easier to use.

2024

10 large healthcare organizations tested the ARMM over a number of weeks and provided feedback to perfect the market use of the device. BISEP has established large-scale manufacturing and quality control processes to bring the ARMM device to market, ensuring it meets high safety and durability standards for widespread use.
